Companies House is entering a defining chapter in its long history. As the UK’s corporate registry and an executive agency of the Department for Business and Trade, it plays a vital role in maintaining the integrity and transparency of the UK business environment. With over 2,000 employees across Cardiff, Edinburgh and Belfast, and a register valued at up to £3 billion annually, Companies House is a cornerstone of UK corporate governance.

The organisation is undergoing its most significant reform since its establishment in the 19th century. The Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023 has granted Companies House new powers to detect and prevent unlawful activity, improve transparency, and strengthen national security. This transformation marks a shift from a passive registrar to an active gatekeeper of corporate integrity. Alongside this, Companies House is modernising its systems and processes to fully harness digital tools and advanced data analytics, ensuring it remains a world-class registry and a key player in the fight against economic crime.

We are now seeking a Chair to lead the Board through this pivotal period of change. The Board is advisory in nature, comprising Executive and Non-Executive Directors, and plays a critical role in challenging and supporting the executive team, setting strategic direction, and overseeing operational effectiveness. The Chair will provide inclusive and strategic leadership, champion the organisation’s role in supporting legitimate business and economic growth, and strengthen relationships across government and industry.

Candidates will bring a strong track record of Board-level leadership, whether as Chair, Chief Executive or Non-Executive Director, in either the public or private sector. They will demonstrate deep governance expertise, strategic vision, and experience leading complex, multi-year transformation programmes. The ability to unlock value from data, navigate a diverse stakeholder landscape, and foster constructive challenge and collaboration will be essential.

If you feel you bring the experience, insight and leadership qualities needed to guide this important organisation through its next chapter, we would be delighted to hear from you. We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive leadership team and welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds, particularly those currently under-represented in public appointments.

Please do refer to the candidate information pack for further information.

Please note:  As of October 2025, the Office of Public Appointments will require all applicants to create/have an account on the Public Appointments Website and use that to submit your equality and outside interests declarations as part of the application process.
