Jenni Douglas-Todd, Chair of Dorset Integrated Care System (NHS Dorset) and University Hospital Southampton shared her journey into leadership with us as part of our Black History Month series, elevating the voices of Black women in leadership.

Jenni started her career in the UK Home Office before moving into her role as
Director Policy and Research for the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC). This was followed by almost three years in Turkey as Resident Advisor for the UK, an interesting challenge she talks about openly.
When Jenni returned to the UK, she took up the Chief Executive position for Hampshire Police Authority and Police and Crime Commissioner for Hampshire before embarking on her first Chair role for the General Dental Council. She contracted for Counter Terrorism Policing before transferring her skills and experience into the Health sector and increasing the variety of her impact through Non Executive Director positions.
On what compelled her to move into Non-Executive Director (NED) roles, Jenni said:
“I really liked having the variety. I wanted to do portfolio work and share my knowledge and expertise in different ways, I love the buzz of finding out new cultures of organisations, working with different people.”
What's underpinned Jenni's career is a commitment to shaping structural and systemic change in a vast array of different public and not for profit organisations, facing incredibly complex challenges while advancing a culture of inclusivity, often in the most extreme of circumstances and environments. You'll no doubt be inspired by what Jenni shares here and there's some fantastic advice and nuggets of wisdom for anyone considering their first NED role.
